In honor of today’s release of The Beatles: Rock Band and Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards I thought it might be appropriate to list the Top Five WORST 60’s Awesome to 80’s Lame Rock transitions.  To more clearly define this phenomena, this is when a bad or singer who started in the 60’s continued to record in the 80’s, and decided that this whole new synthesizer thing was totally for them.

So, without further ado…

  1. George Harrison I’ve Got My Mind Set on You

There were actually three versions of this video.  I posted the best of the three because if you pretend real hard you won’t even know it’s the Beatle with most of the talent tip toeing his way through the quiet guitar world of horns and cheese.  Watch the other versions to see his perfectly feathered hairdo.
  2. The Kinks Come Dancing

Certainly not the worst of the bunch, but far from the best.  At least the video is amusing…
  3. The Moody Blues Your Wildest Dreams

You can still hear the acid in Ray Thomas’ voice, but this is just…awkward.  I saw these guys play live in the late 90’s.  They were back to their original 60’s form.  Couples my parents’ age were on hand passing joints to one another.  It was awesome.  And they didn’t play this song.
  4. Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson Say Say Say

Shame on both of them for this piece of crap.  I know I should not speak ill of the dead (unless the dead is Hitler).  At least MJ went on to Bad, Dirty Diana, & Black and White.  What did Paul do?  Oh right, there was that Hope of Deliverance.  Yeah…
  5. Starship Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now

It was a toss-up between this, We Built This City, & Sara, but I chose this because…well, it sucks and it’s also the theme to the movie Mannequin starring Kim Cattrall & Andrew McCarthy.  Where are they now?  Well, one plays the middle aged slut on Sex & The City (now defunct, but the movie sequel should be out soon), and the other…well, let’s just say the B movies have been treating him interestingly.

Enjoy the VMA’s.  I’m gonna go buy Rock Band (eventually).
