Local Brooklynites know to follow the signs through Red Hook – down Van Brunt to Van Dyke past the big mural, and over a bumpy run of old cobblestone, left at the rickety sign, and into the parking lot next to an old, unassuming warehouse on the waterfront.  Steve’s old, branded truck is parked out front.  There are couple small tables and some plastic chairs, and a couple small indication that this is where you should be.  Pies Here.  Steve’s Authentic (perfect, old fashioned, sweet, tart, creamy, crumbly) Key Lime Pies.

They Just Do Key Lime

For years, key lime pie was a joke to me.  Green Jello baked in a pie topped with whipped cream, hardly touched at family gatherings.  Steve’s pies, however are the real deal.  And real comes at a price.  Steve uses real key limes.  The pies are made fresh daily, and are served at a number of local restaurants.  A 10″ pie costs $25 – no small amount for what looks like a small pie.  But each slice is a delicate blend of rich, creamy, and tart – how a key lime pie should be.  Just walking by en route to the pier?  Grab a 4″ tart and a cold Key Limonade for an authentic Florida Keys snack.

The best way to eat a Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pie is to share it with friends.  Corny, I know.  But true.  You’ll enjoy it.  your friends will appreciate it.  And as good as anything grocery store bought may be, this is 100 times better.
